Bariatric Program
Our Bariatric Program uses a set of
general, baseline criteria for patient selection, with a number of variables
that may be considered.
• Patient must be 18 years of age or older
• Patient should have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater, or between 35-
39 with a
significant comorbidity (medical conditions that is caused by, or made
worse by the
patient’s obesity such as diabetes or obstructive sleep apnea).
• Patient cannot have an contraindication to bariatric surgery (eg, severe
cardiac disease)
In addition to these baseline criteria, each patient’s medical, psych-social,
and weight loss history are evaluated in detail. Our surgeons may obtain
additional information from primary care physicians, pulmonary, cardiology,
psychiatry and other specialties. We may also need diagnostic tests to perform a
comprehensive evaluation. If you have not made significant, well-documented
attempts at non-surgical mean of weight loss in the past, you are not an
appropriate candidate for our program.
In most cases, it is recommended that patients discuss whether they may be a
good candidate for surgery with their primary care physician prior to seeking a
consultation with a surgeon. In fact, some insurance companies require this step
in order for it to be covered. Please contact your insurance company to find out
if these procedures are covered under your plan, and if there are any special
requirements.
